In this edition of Southern Gaming’s Best Bet, we go to the felt of the craps table in an area marked as FIELD in all capital letters. While the Field Bet doesn’t hold the lowest odds in the casino, it is fun to play and you will find that the odds are pretty fair too.
You are basically betting that the next roll of the die will be one of seven numbers: 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11 or 12. Any win will pay even money, except 2 or 12, which usually pay double. If you happen to roll a 5, 6, 7 or 8, you lose. But…what’s the best strategy? Â
A popular betting strategy is to combine the field bets with your place bets. For example, suppose you placed $25 on the 5, $30 on the 6 and 8, and $20 on the field. If the 5, 6 or 8 roll, you win $35 from the place bet and lose the $20 from the field bet for a profit of $15. If the 2 or 12 roll, you win $40 since they each pay double. And if the 2, 4, 9, 10 or 11 come up, you win the $20 field bet and your place bets stay in play.
The house edge on the Field Bet with 2 and 12 paying double is 5.56%. While this isnâ??t nearly as low as the Donâ??t Pass / Donâ??t Come (1.36%) or the Pass / Come (1.41%) bet, it is always fun to have different plays to hedge your bets and add some action to the gaming session.
Here are a few other popular craps bets with their House Edge:Â
- Place 6 or 8:Â 1.52%Â
- Place 5/9:Â 4%Â
- Place 4/10:Â 6.67%Â
- Big 6, 8:Â 9.09%Â
- Hard 6/8:Â 9.09%Â
- Any Craps:Â 11.11%
