Midwest Roadside Distractions: What they are and where you’ll find them!

The World’s Largest! The Biggest! The Tallest! The Smallest! Nothing says America like a good superlative, and nothing helped paint the idyllic image of travel-by-car in mid-century U S of A as much as the roadside attraction did.

Equal parts museum piece, carnival sideshow and schlock, these tawdry excuses to pull off the highway for a little respite from the dotted white lines showcase some of the best and worst of what our country has to offer: For every mammoth monument to the legendary folk heroes of yore (Paul Bunyan) there is macabre marker of our dark side (Who WOULDN’T want to see the Bonnie and Clyde death car?).

Craps: Back to the Basics

Craps is one of the more intense and therefore more fun games in a casino. But it’s also among the more difficult to understand. With this column, I’m beginning a series on the basics of Craps to perhaps help even more people learn how to roll the dice.

Craps Table - Copy

To begin, it helps to understand the roles of the casino personnel attending the game. There are usually three dealers working the game and a box person who supervises. One dealer, called the stickman, stands on the side of the table with the players. He has a long stick that he uses to move the dice. He gives the dice to the shooter, takes the dice to the middle of the table between rolls and announces the payoffs of the winning bets in the middle of the table.

Review by Linda A. from Kingston, OH: It’s always a great visit. Easy check-in, friendly staff. The staff at the buffet is also excellent and the cashiers are very attentive. We’ve visited several times and will visit several more. We also take advantage of the work-out area and pool just to relax. Rising Star is very generous with comps. The free entertainment is also a plus. We can just sit and listen to the band or gamble. The Christmas decor is outstanding and it’s nice to see families bring their children to enjoy the scenery and pool, etc. We did prefer the noon check-out time but that isn’t a huge inconvenience. On a nice day, one can walk up town and enjoy some of the local establishments or just walk along the river. It’s a nice little getaway for us because of our busy schedules. I have referred friends to Rising Star and no one has been disappointed with the property or it’s amenities. The addition of the Lodge was a good managerial decision. Naturally, most guests prefer to be in the main hotel, but it does give another option.

Review by Robin from Beech Grove, IN: I love this casino because it’s always clean, has a friendly staff and I love the inside of the casino. There is such a variety of slot machines and I love the food in the buffet and the little Steakhouse. It was beautifully decorated at Christmas time and the gift shop is so cute and quaint and prices are very reasonable too. The little town it’s in is also great and sits right by the Ohio River. It’s the best casino for me because it’s not a huge casino but I always seem to have good luck there and the slots are good. I’ll continue to keep going back since Rising Star is my favorite casino of all time. I even love the drive and it’s about an hour and half from my house. They always comps my room so I have more money to gamble with. They also have a non-smoking floor which I love because I’m not a smoker. The staff is very friendly and I’ve never had a problem with anything. Sunday through Thursday seem to be less crowded and I really like gambling between the hours of 1:00 and 4:00 in the morning since it seems to be less crowded and the slots are loose…or maybe I just have better luck at that time! I enjoy it the and will be going back soon!

Date of Visit: 10/2016

Reviewer Notes: This was not my first visit but is always my first choice when we go that direction. Lumiere is not the closest for us but we like it because it is always very clean, comfortable and welcoming. I also always get good comps here and the staff is helpful. I can always count on a pleasant stay. A suggestion for the rooms would be to have the option of having a fridge with the mini bar, or just a fridge, in the rooms for convenience. Room service is very prompt and courteous.
